The good thing about being connected to the web is that you have seamless access all sorts of useful information from the latest news to funny videos. The downside about staying online is that you expose yourself to all sorts of online threats, like viruses, Trojans, spyware, and other types of malware. You definitely do not want malware to compromise your computer and put your data in jeopardy.

That is why you must turn to software for help – security software to be more precise. A security software solution that will keep malware at bay and ensure your computer stays safe and secure is the Emsisoft-developed Mamutu. The application’s name is a play on the words “malware” and “mutu”, which is Maori for “stop”. The app’s name basically means “stop malware”.

How does Mamutu stop malware? This guard program has the capabilities to recognize and block dangerous software by using behavior analysis. Other antimalware programs rely on signatures to detect malware. The problem with that approach is that signatures are released after malware is spotted in the wild; that means that until the antimalware gets the signature, it cannot detect the malware.

Mamutu does not rely on signatures to detect malware – it relies on behavior analysis instead, which means it monitors all active programs for any suspicious or dangerous behavior. Thanks to behavior analysis Mamutu can protect against new malware, malware for which there’s no signature yet. Also thanks to behavior analysis, Mamutu doesn’t need to be updated every hour on the hour, as some other security software solutions do.

Security software solutions that hog system resources and slow your computer down to a crawl are very, very annoying. The nice thing about Mamutu is that it doesn’t hog system resources; it does its job without slowing down your computer, without negatively impacting your experience.

Mamutu has a social side as well. It has a community feature that presents you with the decision other Mamutu users took. Say Mamutu detects that app X is behaving like a Trojan. When Mamutu displays an alert for app X, the alert includes a graphic that shows the percentage of users who excluded the app, the percentage of users who allowed the app, and the percentage of users who blocked the app.

Before you go get Mamutu and put it to the test, take a look at the technical details presented below:
Download – the download weighs in at 4.6Mb, which means it will only take a moment to get the app off the web and onto your computer.
Supported OS – at the time of writing this and according to the developer, Mamutu works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
Limitations – you can use Mamutu free of charge for a trial period of 30 days.

It has a nice, simple interface, it doesn’t hog system resources, and it provides behavior-based detection for a long list of security threats. Mamutu is a properly good security software solution for Windows users.

Pros

  • Nice, user friendly interface
  • Behavior-based malware detection
  • Doesn’t have to be constantly updated
  • Doesn’t hog system resources
  • Protect specific programs from 3rd party manipulation
  • Recommendations in alerts

Cons

  • Free to try (30-day trial)
